GLP-1 practical guide

Constipation on a GLP-1

Increase fiber gradually, pair it with enough fluid and keep moving as tolerated.

Build fiber slowly

Oats, kiwi, berries, cooked vegetables, beans, lentils, chia and ground flax can help, but a sudden large increase may create more gas and discomfort.

Fluid has to accompany fiber

Fiber without enough fluid can worsen hard stool. Sip water regularly unless your clinician has given you a fluid restriction.

Movement helps

Walking and regular activity can support bowel motility. A consistent meal and bathroom routine may also help.

Ask before using laxatives

Your pharmacist or prescriber can recommend an option based on your other medicines and medical history. Severe pain, vomiting, marked swelling or inability to pass stool or gas needs prompt evaluation.

Get medical help promptly for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fainting, confusion, signs of dehydration, or symptoms your prescriber told you to treat as urgent.
