Quick answer
The best protein shake is not simply the bottle with the most protein or least sugar. Compare protein with serving volume, total fat, fiber, sweeteners, dairy ingredients, sodium, and how quickly you can comfortably drink it. Some people may feel better with a smaller or less rich serving even when another option looks stronger on paper.

What matters beyond the protein number
Volume
An 11 to 14 ounce shake can be a lot of liquid when appetite is reduced. Half a bottle may feel easier than finishing the full serving at once.
Richness and fat
Higher-fat shakes can feel creamier, but they may also feel heavier for some people. Lower fat is not automatically better, especially if a richer texture helps you consume enough food.
Sweeteners
Sucralose, acesulfame potassium, monk fruit, stevia, sugar, and other sweeteners can taste or feel different from person to person. A lower-sugar label does not guarantee better tolerance.
Dairy and lactose
Lactose-free dairy shakes still contain milk proteins. A non-dairy shake removes dairy but may use plant proteins, added fiber, gums, or different fat sources. Tolerance varies.
Drinking speed
Drinking a concentrated shake quickly may create uncomfortable fullness. Consider sipping slowly or starting with a smaller portion.
When a smaller portion may make sense
If a full bottle feels too large, try half and refrigerate the rest according to package directions. The goal is not to force a label serving when your appetite says otherwise.
